If you come to Rome on April 21, Rome’s birthday, or December 8, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, be sure to visit this square.
16. Trastevere
This is one of the most scenic and pleasant areas of Rome. Trastevere (Italian: Trastevere) is the 13th district of Rome, located southwest of the Vatican, across the Tiber River, an area far from historical sites, attracting tourists mainly for its charm and authenticity.

It is a bustling place with a constant flow of people and you can stroll through the narrow streets lined with small bars, restaurants and shops, where you can truly experience the Italian “Sweet Life” (Dolce Vita) with Roman characteristics.
I recommend just wandering around this area. You’ll find some amazing sights, like Ponte Sisto, Villa Farnesina and the Romanesque Santa Maria del Trastevere. This area has one of the highest concentrations of restaurants in Rome and is a great place to start a food tour.
17. Catacombs
There are several massive catacombs beneath the city of Rome where the Romans buried their dead for centuries. Refusing to cremate their dead or allow them to be buried within the walls of Rome, the Christians chose to build this vast network of underground galleries which over the centuries has become a veritable labyrinth.
There are dozens of catacombs beneath the Italian capital, but only a few can be visited:
- The most visited catacombs are the Catacombs of San Sebastiano, which are 12 km long and named after a martyred soldier.
- Also popular with tourists are the Catacombs of St. Callisto, which stretch over 20 kilometers and contain the burials of many Christian martyrs.
- The Crypt of Priscilla, which contains some extremely important frescoes, including the First Appearance of the Virgin Mary.
- The Saint Ines Catacombs were accidentally discovered beneath a cathedral, the oldest parts of which date back to the 3rd century.
- The Domitilla Catacombs are a 15 km long labyrinth. They are one of the oldest catacombs in Rome.
