WHO calls for vigilance against “collective amnesia” during COVID-19 outbreak and strengthening protection against respiratory diseases

Preventive measures and social responsibility

Kluge warned that emerging and existing viruses could have serious impacts on health systems, economies and societies, so regular and continuous monitoring is necessary to ensure that the global health system is ready to respond to the next major health emergency.

WHO notes that key protective measures against influenza and other respiratory illnesses include staying at home when sick, maintaining hand and cough hygiene, and ensuring good ventilation.

WHO also recommends that vulnerable groups, including those with weakened immune systems and those suspected of being infected with respiratory viruses, wear properly fitted masks in crowded or closed settings.

Krug emphasized that protecting the public from respiratory viruses is the common responsibility of the government and the whole society, and everyone should contribute their own efforts to caring for vulnerable groups and promoting a culture of solidarity.
