Bitter melon’s blood sugar-lowering effect has attracted attention, and people of this type need to be cautious

Bitter melon has similar hypoglycemic effects and can protect cardiovascular health.
There are also some small-scale clinical trials on the consumption of bitter melon, which show that bitter melon has similar effects to hypoglycemic drugs.

In India, patients with type 2 diabetes reduced their oral glucose-lowering drugs by half and took bitter melon extract instead. After 7 days, their glucose-lowering effect was greater than that of the control group that took the full dose of glucose-lowering drugs.

Among 100 patients with moderate non-insulin-dependent diabetes who consumed bitter melon juice, 86% had a significant decrease in both postprandial and fasting blood sugar levels, and 5% had a decrease in fasting blood sugar levels.

Another randomized controlled trial of people with non-insulin-dependent diabetes showed that taking bitter melon extract had effects similar to those achieved by taking the antidiabetic drug rosiglitazone.

Another common glucose-lowering drug is metformin. In a 4-week double-blind randomized controlled trial evaluating the effects of bitter melon and metformin in patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes, researchers concluded that bitter melon had a moderate blood sugar-lowering effect compared with the drug—a conclusion similar to the main conclusion of another 2015 controlled trial using bitter melon and glibenclamide, which found that bitter melon had a moderate blood sugar-lowering effect.

Moreover, an experiment published in the Journal of Nutrition in 2015 further found that people who used bitter melon had significantly lower levels of triglycerides and total cholesterol, while those who took medication had increased blood lipids.

This shows that bitter melon has the comprehensive effect of adjusting blood lipids and metabolism for diabetics in addition to lowering blood sugar. Moreover, bitter melon is a natural food, which can avoid some side effects of drugs and harm to the body.
