Special registration conditions

What if I missed the registration?

If you miss the open enrollment period, you will not be able to buy health insurance for the current year unless there is a special event that qualifies as a Special Enrollment Period . Special events include:

  • Loss of job
  • Loss of health insurance
  • move place
  • marry
  • Giving birth or adopting a child (meaning that you can purchase medical insurance for the newborn immediately after the child is born)
  • New immigrants (green card, naturalization)

If you qualify for the special enrollment period, you can usually sign up for health insurance that takes effect quickly, within 60 days of the special event . Otherwise, you will have to wait until the next open enrollment period to purchase individual health insurance.

Will there be a fine for not buying health insurance?
