- January 1 : If you register and pay the premium before December 15, the new health insurance will take effect and related medical expenses can be reimbursed.
- January 15 : Open enrollment ends. This is the last day to sign up for or change health insurance in 2025. After that, you can only sign up for Obamacare if you meet special conditions.
- February 1 : Health insurance registered and purchased between December 16 and January 15 will take effect from February 1.
Some states have set their own open enrollment periods for health insurance, including:
- California : November 1 – January 31
- Idaho : October 15 – December 16
- Massachusetts : November 1 – January 23
- New Jersey : November 1 – January 31
- New York : November 1 – January 31
- Rhode Island : November 1 – January 31
- Washington DC : November 1st – January 31st

Special registration conditions
What if I missed the registration?
If you miss the open enrollment period, you will not be able to buy health insurance for the current year unless there is a special event that qualifies as a Special Enrollment Period . Special events include:
- Loss of job
- Loss of health insurance

- Giving birth or adopting a child (meaning that you can purchase medical insurance for the newborn immediately after the child is born)
- New immigrants (green card, naturalization)
If you qualify for the special enrollment period, you can usually sign up for health insurance that takes effect quickly, within 60 days of the special event . Otherwise, you will have to wait until the next open enrollment period to purchase individual health insurance.
