A guide to buying individual health insurance in the United States in 2025: plans and costs, government subsidies, insurance companies and purchasing channels

Covered California announced that dental insurance plan premiums will increase by approximately 1.55% in 2025. Participants will be able to choose from a wider range of dental insurance plans, while still being able to find family dental insurance as an add-on option to medical insurance on the Healthy California platform. Please note that some services such as dental implants and adult orthodontics are not included in all plans. The new dental insurance company Humana will provide insurance throughout California for the first time, joining the existing Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Shield of California, California Dental Network and Delta Dental.

2025 US Medicare Open Enrollment Reminder

For 2025, you must register for US health insurance during the Open Enrollment period from 2024/11/1 (Friday) to 2024/12/15 (Friday) , and the insurance will take effect on 2025/1/1 .

Attention California Residents

The registration period for Covered California’s health insurance open enrollment starts from 2024/11/1 (Friday) to 2024/12/15 (Friday) , and the insurance will only take effect on 2025/1/1 . If you do not register in time, California can extend the registration period to  2025/1/31 (Friday) , but the effective time will be delayed, and not all insurance companies and plans will cooperate with the extension of the opening. It is recommended to complete the registration within the specified time.

What if I miss the US health insurance registration deadline?

If you meet the Special Enrollment Period (SEP) requirements, such as sudden loss of health insurance (such as unemployment), moving, marriage, widowhood, childbirth or adoption of a child, etc., and need to apply for health insurance, you are not subject to the Open Enrollment deadline and can purchase health insurance within 60 days of the event.

If you do not meet the SEP requirements, you will not be able to register if you miss the Open Enrollment registration period and must wait until the next year’s Open Enrollment to purchase health insurance.
